Until I was into my 20s, I didn’t even know the elephant was considered lucky to some people. Sacred yes, but lucky, no. I’ve always tried to shy away from good luck charms, lucky numbers, etc. But the older I get the more I find myself susceptible to these things. I was doing some spring cleaning last weekend and I was feeling very satisfied with all the items I was able to purge. But one thing I couldn't bring myself to get rid was this little elephant earing that I got when I was about 10. I lost the other one years ago, more than a decade ago at least. I tucked the elephant into a corner on my book shelf. I don’t think anyone but me will ever notice it. But maybe it will bring me some luck.
During Indian festivals, elephants are decorated in gold bells and necklaces to carry the deity being celebrated through the procession. Our festive Terracotta Elephant Bank is hand painted in designs inspired by Indian temple ceremonies.
